Sheltered

Sheltered housing is for older people. A Sheltered Housing Manager looks after the development and helps residents to live as independently as possible. Most developments have a secure main entrance and all properties have their own front doors.

Properties usually have one or two bedrooms and a community alarm service, allowing residents to call for help 24 hours a day. Developments usually have communal lounges and kitchens, a laundry, gardens and guest suites for visitors.

A small number of owner-occupied developments are classed as ‘Retirement’.  This is similar to sheltered housing however there is no support provided to residents and the staff on site focus on the maintenance of the communal areas of the building. For ease of use we class these as sheltered housing, but we will make you aware of those that we call ‘Retirement Housing’ on the relevant page.
